They are also cheap, which makes them the highest-value upgrade in any rewiring project. What a bus bar does on a boat
A bus bar collects several circuits onto one common conductor, so instead of stacking five ring terminals on a single battery stud you land each wire on its own screw. The result is fewer connections at the battery, cleaner troubleshooting and less chance of a loose stack working itself free in a seaway.
Marine bars differ from the hardware-store kind in the details that matter on the water: tinned copper conductors that resist corrosion in salt air, and stainless screws and studs that do not weld themselves in place after a season. Sizing and wiring it right
Size the bar by counting the circuits you are landing today and adding spares, then check that the bar’s rating covers the total load it will carry; the rating is printed in each product listing. Keep positive bars fed through overcurrent protection, keep wire runs short, and put ring terminals on every conductor rather than wrapping bare wire around a screw. What size bus bar do I need?
Count the circuits you are landing today and add spares for the ones you will add later, because boats only ever gain electronics. If you are landing six wires, a 10 gang bar is the practical minimum; a full console refit usually justifies a 20 gang. Running out of positions is what leads to double-stacked terminals, which is exactly what a bus bar exists to prevent.
Do I need a cover on my bus bar?
On the positive side, yes: an exposed live bar is a short circuit waiting for a dropped tool or a shifting anchor chain, so use a covered model or an insulator. Negative distribution bars are commonly run uncovered, but in a locker where gear moves around, a cover is cheap insurance either way.
What is the difference between a bus bar and a terminal block?
A bus bar ties every position together on one shared conductor, which is what you want for distributing a common positive or collecting grounds. A terminal block keeps each circuit as its own isolated pair, which is what you want for passing individual circuits through a bulkhead. Different jobs, and most rewiring projects end up using both.
