Underwater lights change how a boat looks at the dock and how it fishes at night. They also involve one decision most other accessories do not: whether you are willing to put holes in your hull, and where. Surface mount, thru-hull or drain plug
Surface mount lights are the mainstream choice. The fixture sits on the transom, fastened with small screws, and only the cable passes through, above or below the waterline depending on the model. Thru-hull fixtures, like the bronze Lumitec SeaBlaze Typhoon series, mount through a dedicated hole in the hull. They are the choice for larger boats and yachts where output and a flush look matter more than installation simplicity. A thru-hull install is not a first project: it involves cutting the hull below the waterline and sealing it permanently.
Drain plug lights use the garboard drain hole your boat already has, so nothing new is drilled at all. Output is modest compared to a transom array, but for a trailer boat that wants a glow without any new holes, they are the simplest path.
Which color to choose
Blue is the classic saltwater look. It penetrates clear water farther than other colors, which is why it dominates behind boats in South Florida.
Green is the fishing color. It stands out in greenish or murky water and is the most popular choice for drawing baitfish to the transom at night.
White shows everything in natural color and doubles as practical light for swim platforms and boarding at night.
If you do not want to choose, dual color models switch between two fixed colors, usually white and blue, and Spectrum or RGBW models let you set any color from an app or controller. The premium over single color is real, so it comes down to whether you fish, entertain or both.

Are underwater boat lights legal?
In most states, including Florida, underwater lights are legal to install. The practical rule is that they must never be mistaken for or interfere with your navigation lights, so many owners run them only while anchored or docked. Check the current FWC boating regulations for the exact rules that apply to your use.
Can I install underwater boat lights without drilling through the hull?
Yes. Surface mount lights attach to the transom with small screw holes above or below the waterline and only need a hole for the cable, not a thru-hull penetration. Drain plug lights go even further and use the existing garboard drain hole, so nothing new is drilled.
What color underwater light is best for night fishing?
