Do You Need a Professional to Install a VHF Radio and AIS?

Short answer: swapping an existing VHF radio for a new one is a reasonable DIY job. Installing VHF from scratch, and installing AIS in almost every case, is where a professional earns their fee. The radio itself is the easy part; the antenna work, the network integration and the one-time programming are where installs go wrong. At Marine Overhauling in Pompano Beach, FL, most of the “my radio has no range” boats we see have a perfectly good radio connected to a bad crimp or the wrong antenna.

What a VHF installation really involves

A VHF install is four jobs in one: clean 12V power with proper fusing, mounting the radio where it stays dry, running coax to the antenna, and terminating the connectors. The last one decides your range. A poorly crimped PL-259 connector or corroded coax quietly kills transmit power, and antenna height matters more than radio wattage, since VHF is line of sight. If your existing setup works and you are replacing like for like, reusing a known-good antenna and cable makes it a genuine DIY afternoon.

Why AIS is a different animal

A Class B AIS transceiver looks like one more black box, but it brings requirements a basic VHF does not:

  • Its own GPS antenna with a clear sky view, positioned away from other transmitters.
  • VHF antenna strategy: either a dedicated AIS antenna mounted with proper separation from your VHF antenna, or a purpose-built splitter sharing one antenna. Plain antenna splitters or improvised sharing damage transmitters.
  • MMSI and static data programming: your vessel’s MMSI, name and dimensions are programmed once. In the US, if the MMSI is entered incorrectly, most units must go back to a dealer or the manufacturer to be reset. This is the single most common AIS installation mistake.
  • Network integration: AIS targets are far more useful overlaid on your chartplotter, which means wiring into your NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 network correctly.

When to call a professional

  • New antenna runs through the console, arch or mast.
  • Any AIS transceiver install, because of the MMSI programming and antenna separation rules.
  • Integration with a chartplotter, autopilot or an existing NMEA 2000 backbone.
  • DSC setup, so the red distress button actually transmits your position.
  • Any sign of corroded wiring or mystery electrical gremlins; installs on top of bad wiring inherit its problems.

If none of those apply and you are simply replacing a radio in the same spot, do it yourself and spend the savings on a better antenna.
